April 26, 2023 (Nashville, Tenn.) – Yesterday afternoon, the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) welcomed songwriters and guests to The Reserve at Fat Bottom Brewery for the World’s Largest #1 Party. The celebration was held to honor all songs with a Nashville-associated writer that reached #1 on the Billboard Airplay, Digital, Hot or Mediabase charts during the period of January – December 2022.
The event began with a special presentation, awarding former Nashville Congressman Jim Cooper with the NSAI Advocacy Award, an honor bestowed by the NSAI Board of Directors to an individual who has significantly served the American Songwriting Profession.
“Congressman Cooper paid special attention to songwriters throughout his service in Washington,” said NSAI Executive Director Bart Herbison. “From his early and unwavering support of the Music Modernization Act to the Songwriter’s Capital Gains Tax Equity Act, we are grateful for his support.”

Festivities then turned to recognizing the songwriters and songs that topped the eligible charts during the 12 month time period. NSAI Executive Director, Bart Herbison, presented awards for a total of 47 songs to songwriters in several genres. Attendees included writers, publishers, artists, and numerous industry guests to support the honorees on their achievements.
The final award of the afternoon was presented by Erika Wollam Nichols, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of The Bluebird Cafe, as she welcomed Butch Spyridon, CEO of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation (NCVC) who recently announced his pending retirement, to the stage to receive The NSAI Champion Award. Spyridon received the award in recognition of the generous support for – and dedication to – songwriters, the music industry, and NSAI throughout his entire career.
“Butch has lifted songwriters throughout his tenure at the NCVC. He produced the amazing documentary ‘It All Begins With A Song,’ the story of Nashville Songwriters, helped songwriters become the centerpiece of corporate performances in Nashville and used music in everything from Nashville hosting the NFL draft to recruiting industry," Nichols and Herbison said.
